US Embassy warns of possible Egypt attack by Hassm militants

The United States Embassy in Cairo warned on Wednesday of a possible imminent attack in Egypt by the Hassm militant group.

The embassy announced on its website that it had no further information about the attack, but that it is in contact with Egyptian authorities.

Around the same time the warning was released, Hassm posted the word “soon” on Facebook, followed by a video an hour later that they said was of an attack in Nasr City earlier this month.

On May 1, two commissioned police officers and one enlisted officer were shot dead at a checkpoint in a drive-by attack in Nasr City. The newly formed “Hawks of Determination,” affiliated with the Hassm militant group, claimed the attack.

Hassm announced the deaths of six people in this operation, in addition to the destruction of two security vehicles and the hijacking of two AK47s, in a statement published on The Resistance Media Facebook page, adding that the group would release a video of the operation soon.

Hassm became active in 2016 and has claimed responsibility for several similar operations targeting police personnel since last July, including the bombing of a checkpoint in Behteem, on the outskirts of Giza, in March this year. They also claimed an attack on a checkpoint in Haram last December that killed six police personnel.
