A police officer and a civilian died in the crossfire as six inmates escaped from Mostaqbal Prison in Ismailia on Thursday night, the Ministry of Interior reported in a statement Friday.

Security forces apprehended one of the escaped prisoners after he was shot, according to the statement.

The head of Abu Soueir Police Station, Mohamed al-Husseini, and citizen Ahmed Abdel Wahab Rizk, both died in the crossfire, according to the Interior Ministry, while policeman Mohamed Abouel Fotouh was injured and is receiving treatment.

The escape took place after an inmate reportedly faked sickness, the privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported, quoting security sources. When policeman Abouel Fotouh opened the cell door, several inmates attacked him, taking his weapon and shooting him in the foot before escaping.

Al-Masry Al-Youm and local journalist Yousri Mohamed quote a security source saying three of the escaped detainees belong to the Province of Sinai, affiliated with the Islamic State, and have been accused of smuggling weapons into Sinai.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Ismailia Prosecution summoned the head of the prison and security forces guarding it as part of an investigation into the incident.
