Nour Party demands electricity minister’s resignation

The Nour Party has demanded Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker hand in his resignation for alleged incompetence in dealing with power outages affecting areas across Egypt.

The Salafi-oriented party demanded the appointment of a competent official capable of handling the crisis, in a statement on its official Facebook page.

Nour Party official Salah Abdel Maabous demanded the government explain the facts behind the crisis to the Egyptian people, adding that Shaker’s statements so far have been far from transparent.

Maabous claimed that the minister is yet to offer any solutions to the problem, almost a week after a blackout left Cairo and other areas of the country without power for several hours on Thursday.

The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company said that a technical malfunction had caused the unplanned power cuts in several regions around Egypt.

Last month, Shaker removed several officials from electricity sector positions for their alleged affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood.
