One killed in clashes in Ezbet al-Nakhl

One person was killed and at least 20 stores were destroyed on Youssef al-Degwy Street in front of Ezbet al-Nakhl metro station in the north east Cairo neighborhood of Matareya on Thursday, after clashes erupted between members of the Muslim Brotherhood and residents of the neighborhood.

Following the evening prayer on Wednesday, a Brotherhood protest moved through the neighborhood, with protesters chanting against the armed forces and the police. According to state-owned Al-Ahram gate, residents and shop owners began panicking as Brotherhood members shot wildly into the crowd, killing one person and destroying dozens of commercial outlets.

Metro services were halted for an hour and Central Security Forces were deployed in the neighborhood to stabilize the situation. A security search of the area for Brotherhood members resulted in the arrest of five individuals, two of which are young women, state-owned MENA reported.

According to local media reports, the clashes have died down and police forces are currently securing the neighborhood.

Matareya has witnessed increasing violence in the last few months. In March, a police officer was killed and two others were injured when an unknown individual opened fire on a bus near the Matareya Police Station. On the third anniversary of the January 25 uprising, clashes broke out between Matareya residents and Brotherhood protesters, leaving at least 9 people dead.

Matareya is close to the Ain Shams district, which is known to have a strong Brotherhood presence.
