An army conscript was killed in an exchange of fire with gunmen in Sheikh Zuwayed on Sunday, according to a statement posted on the Armed Forces’ spokesperson’s official Facebook page.
Mohamed Gouda Hefny was killed during a security operation, state-owned Al-Ahram reported, in which another conscript was injured.
“The Armed Forces’ reiterates its determination to continue its war on terrorism and the groups that threaten the lives of Egyptians, until they are eradicated — no matter how much we sacrifice,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, according to another Facebook statement, the Armed Forces claimed to have arrested 25 extremists, including a Palestinian national whose residency had expired.
The statement said that the Palestinian was in possession of a laptop that contained photos and schemes for terrorist plots.
Two “takfiri elements” in Sheikh Zuwayed also reportedly turned themselves in, the statement added.
Egypt’s military has launched a sustained crackdown campaign on armed groups in the Sinai Peninsula since attacks on security forces increased following the removal of former President Mohamed Morsi from power in July 2013.
