The number of tourists visiting Egypt decreased by 28.9 percent this January compared to the same period last year, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the official news agency MENA reported Monday.

CAPMAS said that 642,000 tourists visited Egypt this January, while 903,000 had been to the country in January 2013.

The number of tourists visiting from Arab countries decreased by 46.6 percent, down from 190,600 tourists in January 2013 to 101,800 tourists in January this year, CAPMAS said in its monthly tourism bulletin.

The total nights spent by tourists coming to Egypt amounted to 8.9 million in January, compared to 13.8 million nights spent in January last year, a total slump of 35.5 percent.

The total nights spent by tourists visiting from Arab countries alone reached 2.5 million this year compared to 4.1 million last year, the figures showed, a decrease of 37.6 percent.

The total average nights spent by one tourist also decreased from 14.6 last year to 13 nights this year.

The tourism industry has been the one hit the hardest by the political instability and lack of security plaguing the country since 2011. Revenues from the industry reached their peak in 2010, reaching US$12.5 billion, compared to only $5.9 billion last year.
