Parents who claimed their children were being detained attempted to storm the Shubra Police Station on Monday, succeeding in breaking down the station’s main gate, reported the state-run Middle East News Agency.
The parents claimed that a teacher belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood was trying to take their children to the Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in when he was detained. Police sources said the teacher claimed he was taking the minors to buy new clothes in celebration of the Eid holiday. At the time of arrest, the authorities decided to keep the minors in a shelter at the station before sending them to the prosecution for their release. After their families attacked the police station, the authorities decided to release the children to their families, MENA reported.
Rights organizations have slammed the Brotherhood for allegedly exploiting children in their campaign in support of deposed President Mohamed Morsi. The Egyptian Coalition for Children’s Rights accused the group of abuse after photographs of children supposedly carrying their own shrouds at the Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in were circulated in social media.
