Armed Forces in Sinai

Sinai operations kill 23 since Friday

The Armed Forces said Sunday that they had killed three extremists in a security operation in northern Sinai, according to a statement posted on the Facebook page of the official spokesperson.

Ten others were arrested in the operation and 25 huts, allegedly used by militants to launch “terrorist attacks against the police and army” were burned, the statement alleged.

This comes after 20 were killed and 70 others injured on Friday in an air strike as part of another security operation in Sheikh Zuwayed, targeting “extremist and terrorist strongholds,” the statement said.

The Armed Forces also defused an explosive device planted on the Rafah-Sheikh Zuwayed road Sunday, targeting the Armed Forces on their way back from the security operation.

Egypt's military has launched a sustained crackdown on armed groups in the Sinai peninsula since attacks on security forces increased following the removal of former President Mohamed Morsi from power in July 2013.
