Zamalek Club Ultras clashed with security forces after attempting to storm the club’s headquarters in Cairo’s Mohandiseen neighborhood, reported the state-owned Middle East News Agency on Thursday.

The football fans were protesting against what they described as the club administration’s corruption and mismanagement, evidenced in the team’s recent string of defeats.

The ultras demanded the resignation of the club’s executive board.

After the fans tried to storm the headquarters, security forces fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the angry crowds, who retaliated by shooting fireworks. One of the kiosks in front of the club’s main gate was set ablaze as a result.

The decision to escalate the protests was triggered by Zamalek’s painful 4-2 loss to longtime rival Al-Ahly in the African League Championship last week.
